KingDon's Beer Sanctuary

Total Beer Caps: 31

Here I will review some of the different beers I have had. I will only be scanning bottlecaps for the time being though many of these beers I have also tasted from tap/kegs/cans/etc.

Some comments have been taken from a very nice beer page I came accross written by Wesi - http://www.swissbeer.ch/beer.html.   He should have a new site design soon and I will update the address if need be when the time comes.

Do not take all these reviews as perfect descriptions of every beer. Some have been done from memory, though should be pretty correct. Different people like different beers and so on... Just ask a redneck what his favorite beer is and I bet its cheap, thin, and lacking on taste as well as alcohol. Not that alcohol is everything. I hope you enjoy looking over what I thought about these beers and give some of them a try yourself. Trying new beers is always a good thing!

KingDon

Amber Bock:
Body - 1.5/5
Fairly inexpensive - ($6/6-pack)
Decent taste - (mild flavor)
Ok aftertaste - (mild flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold (dare to drink it warm!)
Comment: I get the urge to vomit if I drink more than 3 of these.
Comment: Wesi: Amber in color doesn't necessarily mean amber in taste. A bit more taste than the ordinary Busch brewskis, but still rather thin and with hardly any aftertaste. Try it only if you ain't got anything better handy.

(special top on the bowling
Bud Light:
Body - 1/5
Pretty Cheap - ($15/24-pack)
Decent taste - (very mild flavor)
Ok aftertaste - (very mild flavor)
Tastes best very cold to frosty
Comment: A good beer to kick back with at a ballgame.

Colt 45:
Body - 1/5
Inexpensive - ($4/6-pack)
Decent taste - (light flavor)
Ok aftertaste - (mild flavor)
Tastes best very cold
Comment: Probably the best example I can think of for a malt/beer concoction. This beer is not in my drinking rotation...

Corona:
Body - 2/5
Not Cheap - ($9/6-pack)
Good/Decent taste - (medium flavor)
OK aftertaste - (mild flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold on the beach ;)
Comment: Wesi: A best-seller world wide. That doesn't make it any better, though. It's not the taste that offends me, but the typical Corona stench of burro pee. Undrinkable without lime. (KingDon - I could not have put this better myself!)
Origin: Modelo, Mexico

JW Dundee's Honey Brown:
Body - 2/5
Fairly Inexpensive - ($6/6-pack)
Good taste - (medium flavor)
Annoying aftertaste - (mild sweet flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold
Comment: Worth trying once. Soon you will get sick of the so-called, honey flavor.

Killians Irish Red:
Body - 2/5
Not Cheap - ($8/6-pack)
Good taste - (medium flavor)
Good aftertaste - (mild dry flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold
Comment: Definetly a decent beer. Far better on tap.

Lowenbrau:
Body - 2/5
Not Cheap - ($7/6-pack?)
Good taste - (medium flavor)
Annoyinh/Decent aftertaste - (medium bitter flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold
Comment: Has a wine undertone to me. Good for an occasional change.

Natural Light:
Body - .75/5
Pretty Cheap - ($14/24-pack)
Decent taste - (mild flavor)
Extemely Annoying aftertaste - (mild flavor, almost buttery)
Tastes best very cold to frosty
Comment: This beer has a trademark butter aftertaste, possibly stemming from its extreme thinness. Only once you drink it will you understand this butter reference I make, and everafter you will think of "Natty Light" as a -stick of butter- beer.

Newcastle Brown Ale:
Body - 2.25/5
Pricey - ($9/6-pack)
Good taste - (medium/light heavy flavor)
Decent aftertaste - (light flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold
Comment: Yet another beer with not much exciting about it. One exploded in my freezer and the gummy crap it left behind was hell to clean!
Comment: Wesi: Promising look, a taste that starts like a real ale, but drops like a stone from a cliff. Hardly any aftertaste. Weak.

Southpaw:
Body - 1.5/5
Dirt Cheap - ($10/24-pack)
Decent taste - (medium light/medium flavor)
Decent aftertaste - (medium light/medium flavor)
Tastes best very cold to frosty
Origin: Plank Road Brewery, Milwaukee, WI
Comment: Beer for when you are broke. This beer, although posessing a redeeming high alcohol content, also makes your intestines pay for a couple days because of some minor brewing mistake. ;)
Comment: Wesi: I don't buy light beers unless I can't get anything better. As expected, it starts like a real beer on the tip of your tongue, but the taste drops like from a cliff when you swallow it. Still, this one has unexpectedly generous hops for a light beer and is in my opinion better than the Icehouse Brew made by the same brewery.

Warsteiner:
Body - 2/5
Not Cheap - ($7/6-pack?)
Decent taste- (medium light/medium flavor)
Questionable aftertaste - (medium light/medium flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold
Comment: I do not believe real Germans drink this stuff. I was hoping for a strong hearty beer but only got results similar to Lowenbrau. Women might like this one more than me.

Ice House:
Body - 2/5
Not Cheap - ($6/6-pack)
Decent taste- (medium flavor)
Weak aftertaste - (medium flavor)
Tastes best cold to very cold
Comment: From the makers of SouthPaw also comes this brew. The only stight differences between the two is that IceHouse has a slightly better flavor and makes me sick only half as fast.
Comment: Wesi: The usual. Rather flat, both in taste and in aftertaste. Drink it fast, the longer it takes, the more boring the taste seems to be. All right if you can't get anything better.
Origin: Plank Road Brewery, Milwaukee, WI

Guinness Draught:
Body - 5/5
Pretty Expensive - ($9/6-(bottles) - $8/4(pints))
Great Taste- (thick stout flavor)
Great aftertaste - (Stout flavor (reminds me of coal - its good)
Tastes best room temp. to warm
Comment: This is definetly the best beer I have ever had. Actually, this beer is so good it tastes better from a can than most beers could ever hope to taste from a tap!
Comment: Wesi: Don't think I need to describe it. The world is divided into Guinness-lovers, Guinness-haters and ignorants. I'm a worshiper. Creamy, bitter, roasty - one of the best beers on sale and the only brew of worldwide availability that I really like.

Becks Dark:
Body - 2.5/5
Pricey - ($8/6-(bottles))
Good Taste- (stout flavor)
Good/Decent aftertaste - (pretty strong flavor)
Tastes best cold to almost frozen
Comment: I first had this over fried dill pickle appetizers. It was very refreshing with the salty pickles. A pretty good light/dark beer.

(This top came on the larger bottle)

(This top came on a 12oz bottle)
Murphy's Irish Stout:
Body - 3.5/5
Expensive - ($3/1-(bottles))
Good Taste- (strong flavor)
Decent aftertaste - (mild flavor)
Tastes best chilled to frosty Comment: Worth checking out. I could better judge this beer had I had it on tap.
Comment: Wesi: Color and foam promise something the taste can't really catch up with. A bit weak in roast. Still, it's creamy, smooth and cool. Nice hint of licorice in the aftertaste. OK.

Anchor Steam:
Body - 3.5/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
Decent taste- (stout flavor)
Decent aftertaste - (medium flavor)
Tastes best chilled to cold
Comment: It seems to me that a beer with a reputation like this one should taste more like its reputation. I was let down a little.
Comment: Wesi: A good beer with light red roast, decently hopped. If you are growing tired of all these flat american beers and looking for something tasty, try this. It is good, but considering its reputation I think I expected more. I think its taste is a bit too bitter and slightly metallic. Hmm. Kinda reminds me of some German Pils. OK - but I wouldn't give it a better rating than (missing some beer here I think)
Origin: Anchor, San Francisco, CA

Tecate:
Body - 2/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
Good Taste
Good aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: Wesi: Thin. American taste made in Mexico. Gulp it down and go get your nickel for the redemption of the can. This way, you'll get at least something rewarding... (KingDon - Very true. Nickel/Peso whatever...)

Abita Purple Haze:
Body - 2/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
Decent Taste (light raspberry flavor)
Decent aftertaste (raspberry undertones)
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: I can not say how long it will be before I buy this beer again but I may have children by this point. Not a favorite at my house.
Comment: Wesi: Cheap lager with some drops of raspberry sirup. Purple haze? Indeed - in front of my eyes. I see red whenever I get near a fruit-flavored beer. If you think beer has to taste like this one, you should maybe settle back to drinking cherry cola. Brewers, gimme a break! Sirup and beer dont mix!
Origin: Abita, Abita Springs LA

Budweiser:
Body - 2/5
Moderate - ($6/6 (bottles))
Decent Taste
Decent aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: This has to be one of the most well known American beers. I am not impressed. Its taste seems to be holding back, for what I do not know.

Dos Equis Amber:
Body - 2/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
Decent Taste
Decent aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: Much rather drink this with some food. Wesi has the right idea...
Comment: Wesi: Not really an amber - the only thing amber with it is its transparent amber color, looking like watered cola. A bit thin in taste, not at all like an amber. Not too big a difference to XX Lager. But overall: Try it with some lime, together with some mexican dish - and you'll like it.

Fosters Lager:
Body - 2.5/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
Good Taste
Good aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: This is definetly a good beer. I like Fosters Ice much more though. Nice with meals or a movie.

Heineken Dark:
Body - 2.5/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
Good Taste
Decent aftertaste (raspberry undertones)
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: Reminds me of Becks Dark. A good changeup beer.

Heineken:
Body - 2.25/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
Good/Decent Taste
Decent aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: I have not quite decided on this beer as of yet. One time it tasted like what I imagine urine to tasts like and another time it was refreshing. I think you need to be very hot to really enjoy this beer.

Mikes Hard Lemonade:
Body - 1.5/5
Moderate - ($6/6 (bottles))
Decent Taste (lemonade - surprise!)
Decent aftertaste (also lemonade...)
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: Not a bad drink though its far from a good beer. This is what I like to call sissy/cheerleader beer. Any self respecting man would not drink this on a regular schedule

Natural Ice:
Body - 1/5
Cheap - ($4/6 (bottles))
OK Taste
OK aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: This beer falls into the same basic category as Icehouse/Southpaw dont fill up on this weak beer!.

Rolling Rock:
Body - 2/5
Moderate - ($6/6 (bottles))
OK Taste
OK aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: Green Bottles scare me. I would never buy this beer to drink myself.

Rolling Rock Light:
Body - 2/5
Fairly Expensive - ($7/6 (bottles))
OK Taste
OK aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: Rolling Rock Light is twice as good as its heftier counterpart Rolling Rock. Still tastes weird. Still don't like green bottles.

Zima Citrus:
Body - 1/5
Moderate - ($6/6 (bottles))
Decent Taste
OK aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: 7uP that has fermented. This is more cheerleader beer. Do not buy this for a man.

Miller Lite:
Body - 1.5/5
Inexpensive - ($5/6 (bottles))
Decent Taste
Decent aftertaste
Tastes best cold to frosty
Comment: Here is the skinny on this beer. Not a favorite of mine but under the right circumstances you too just might enjoy it. This is not a beer to sit down and taste. It is solely a beer to quench your thirst. If you are hot and tired this is a nice thin beer thats not big on taste you can relax with.

More coming always!
